Arbrisseau de 2-5 mètres, à jeunes rameaux pubérulents
Écologie : (répartition d'après la flore) Cultivé partout et subspontané çà et là dans une grande partie de la France et de l'Europe. Largement échappée et naturalisée sur les anciennes vignes à Florac.
Répartition hors de France : Spontané dans l'Europe orientale ; Hongrie, Transylvanie, Roumanie, Bulgarie, Serbie, Monténégro.

Shrub of 2-5 m, with slightly hairy young stems.
Ecology UK: Not native to the UK
Cultivated extensively, sometyimes subspontaneous. Widely escaped and naturalised in the former vineyards at Florac.
Distribution outside France: Spontaneous extensively in Europe, Hungary, Transylvania, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro.

Fleurs : lilas ou violacées, rarement blanches, odorantes, en panicules ou thyrses terminaux très fournis ; calice petit, persistant, à dents ; corolle en entonnoir, à tube allongé, à lobes étalés, obovales, concaves étamines incluses ; stigmate bifide ;
Floraison France : Avril-mai.

Flowers: lilac or violet, rarely white, fragrant, in thick terminal panicles. Calyx toothed, small, persistent; corolla funnel-shaped with an elongated tube,and outspread lobes, obovale, concaves, stamens confined, stigma bifid.
